The Veterans Memorial bus line was begun in 1959 by Louisiana Transit Company. Service runs from Kenner (formerly from 21st St. and Roosevelt Blvd., in 2014 from Williams Blvd. and 25th St.) via Veterans Memorial Blvd. to Pontchartrain Blvd. (later I-10) to Metairie Rd. and terminal at Canal Blvd. and City Park Ave. Buses used to lay over alongside Odd Fellows Cemetery, making a sharp left turn across two lanes of traffic to Canal Blvd. to U turn back to Metairie Rd. The layover was changed to the neutral ground of Canal Blvd to lay over with Metairie Road buses. After Jefferson Transit (JeT) began administration in the early 1980s, the route was numbered E1. Gillig Phantoms carried the sign E1 Veterans Memorial, while Gillig BRTs read simply E1 Veterans.
